the ruffled cami & tropical shorts

pull on shorts for adults. #yesplease.

while i have regular places that i normally shop at, it is always fun discovering new boutiques! a recent discovery is the reddressboutique.com -- they have the cutest clothes and at such great price points that don't break the bank. they also have a lot of new items almost everyday and offer free shipping on order $50 or more (this isn't hard to reach). they have a great selection of summer clothes, rompers, swimwear, jewelry, and they also have a cute home & office selection as well -- great for gifts! but the main reason why i like the the reddressboutique.com is because they have such cute colorful and bright clothing which i can definitely use some of!

this ruffled cami is going to be on repeat quite a bit this summer. dressy camis are such an easy full-proof top because they always go with everything -- pants, skirts, shorts, and you can always drape a cardigan over it as well! lastly, these pull on shorts (hello elastic band, and endless chips & salsa && guac &&& queso), are really fun! especially the print, total vacay vibes, and i should also add that i am on a lilac kick right now. lastly, the block heels are my go-to and the scalloped detail on these and color make it sure pick for summatime. click read more below for more all the color options on the cami and print options on the shorts!

the peplum top & coral pants

not your average pants.

add a pop of color to your work wardrobe with some colored pants! as much as i love B&W, i feel like it's a good idea to throw in some color sometimes?! these coral pants make me pretty happy. and what's better is that it goes with NAVY!! i have worn this to work a few times and always receive so many compliments. i have a hard time finding work pants because i am SO PICKY. most of them are always too long in terms of length and inseam, the material is too thin or too thick/wooly. there are no slanted pockets (don't ask but this is such a huge must for me), there are pleats or the closure is an extended tab. anyways, call me crazy but these Banana Republic Avery pants fit perfectly and meet all my pant expectations! they are also available in regular, tall, and petite and multiple colors! i'm thinking the light blue might be next!

onto the top. well, it's peplum. it's white. and it's pleated. that's all!

side happenings: for the past week i have been battling a nasty bug. i have not been sick for three years and i'm pretty much down for the count right now. #sucks. this past weekend i was going to skip out on a Derby day polo match (that happens ONCE A YEAR!) but someone knocked some sense into me and said, "get up. dress up. show up." i firmly believe in the power of showing up. i just needed a nudge. it was so fun but obviously i couldn't take much of it, #noregrets. more picts at the end! i am also trying all remedies to get myself better for Austin Fashion Week!!

the striped cut out summer dress

just cut. it. out.

i posted a quick photo of this on instagram a few weeks ago, the engagement was outrageous so i had to document it. this is my second cut out dress to date. it's really hard to find a good cut out dress that is not showing too much skin. the first one was a LBD + bomber jacket style (hello epic twirl). with cut outs sometimes it is hard to find a good fit because they can usually be too large or in an undesired place. when this came out, i immediately jumped on it. it sold out the next few days! goodness. i've worn it twice and every time, i get a dozen compliments on it. the cut out is in a perfect spot, it actually keeps you really cool #TEMPwise too!, linen-ish material, it has pockets, it is striped, and... my favorite part is actually the knotted detail. #knotkidding. the only downside is that it can snag pretty easy so you gotta be a little careful with it. and YES, i've already snagged it. LOL.

new to JDC: HATS. i think i have decided to become a hat person!! what do you think?!?! the truth is i've always wanted to be a hat person and for 32 years of my life i never really wore hats because i did not think they looked right on me. but my good blogger friend over in Florida, Jen // @mrsjenfrick (featured on this post!), convinced me i need to give the hat another try before completely saying goodbye to it. soooo glad i did (thanks Jen!). back in the days of trying to be a hat person i bought this straw fedora, i dusted it off #literally and brought it to this shoot. even Brandon (amazing photographer) said it went perfectly -- from a guy y'all! next hat purchase shall be a camel colored felt/wool fedora.

lastly, a shout out to Jen // mrsjenfrick.com, whom i talk to on almost a regular basis, not only about blogging but life in general. she is always the most encouraging individual who always makes my day! she cheers me on and is very supportive. i haven't met Jen in person, but i certainly will one day! she also recently became a CHIC mommy too! you can probably tell why we are good friends... we styled this outfit exactly the same. we have the same exact sandals (which mine have seen better days) prior to the dress, except she has the cutest #signature dimples, and she is my inspo for the hat (i love her boater hat!) Jen, you're the best, thanks for being in my life!

hope y'all had a fun Easter weekend. i'm gearing up for a really busy week ahead with coffee in hand! as always, thanks for stopping by xoxo.

the striped ruffle one shoulder top

ruffles + stripes = win.

i cannot help myself when it comes to stripes or ruffles OR peplum, gingham, scalloped hems.. but i digress. i eyed this top when it came out and was a tad skeptical because of the double layer of ruffles, i thought i was going to be a busy top with the stripes too. THEN, my blogger friend, @byhilaryrose posted it to her instastory and the rest was history. she has impeccable taste, it looked amazing on her and not the overwhelming at all.

since then the top has come in several colors, solids, and different price points. the one i'm wearing is $24 and fits true to size, the sleeves are a bit long so i folded them up. i wasn't sure how to style it and then one day i had that AH HA moment, WHITE JEANS! duh! finally i busted those babies out and wondered why i didn't do so earlier. in case you didn't know, it wasn't until last year that white jeans became a thing for me (late on the bandwagon, i know).

lastly, these tassel earrings are LIFE! most tassel earrings are beaded which means they are heavy, they are so pretty but i can't wear them for too long due to my fatty ear lobes!! these are so light i can wear them for hours and forget i am even wearing them. they also come in many colors so good luck choosing one!!

side happenings: some Austin bloggers and i got together for a picnic/Easter photoshoot! it was a really windy, but when does the wind ever cooperate?! #eatinghair. thanks for those who followed along my @maggylondon instagram takeover, it was AWESOME and i am so grateful! but this is not the end, many more things coming to JDC that i cannot wait to share. one of them being a DERBY! whaaa!!!

wedding guest dresses with Maggy London

wedding season is upon us!

ah yes, it's that time of the year when we're all scrambling to find that wedding guest dress and determining which to wear to what, seeing what we can borrow from our friends, and who will be at what wedding so you can possibly re-wear something. anyone with me?!

when this dress arrived from Maggy London, i immediately knew i wanted to do a post on wedding guest dresses. this Maggy London betty dress is a perfect wedding guest dress for a few reasons: it is not too casual or too dressy, below the knee length, the jacquard print makes it a great dress for some sort of event (does not have to be a wedding), fit and flare bottom (forgiving after a good meal), not to mention.... it has POCKETS. it's the little things y'all. i linked some options for guest of the wedding dresses after the jump and in shop the post, all under $150.

some things to keep in mind when picking a dress to wear to a wedding (merely my own opinions):

  • YES... even though it is 2017 and the fact that i'm old school... DO NOT wear white (or any shade of white including cream, off-white, etc...) to a wedding! please for the love everyone.
  • keep it classy. you can never go wrong with a conservative, classy outfit -- nothing too revealing, too low cut, too short, too tight like a sausage casing etc...
  • if you have to ask someone "is this okay to wear to a wedding?" -- it probably isn't, so don't.
  • depending on the type of venue, like a beach/destination wedding you can totally get away with a flowy summer dress with some sandals. but otherwise, that isn't appropriate to wear to a formal wedding venue.
  • when all else fails, wear a black dress. you can never go wrong with the #LBD. jazz it up with some earrings, a statement necklace, or some lipstick. see my lastest post on the LBD (both wedding appropriate).
  • not feeling a dress? JUMPSUIT it! bust out that wide leg jumpsuit you never really get to wear and rock it. or... wear a MAXI dress!
  • never wear jeans. ever. or hats, shorts, flip flops...
  • anything too sexy, too glitzy/sequin-y.

lastly, if you would like to follow along i'll be taking over the @MaggyLondon instagram for the next three days!! i am beyond thrilled for this opportunity!! #powerofpossibilities

how to wear culottes

culottes: (noun) how to pronounce it here: women's knee-length trousers, cut with very full legs to resemble a skirt.

i've been saying this word wrong for a while, so now that i have it down, let's post about it and share how to wear these thangs! it's either a love or hate. i happen to love them!  through trial and error, here are my four things i look out for when picking culottes:

  • go for the high waisted fit, it is just way more flattering and not to mention classy.
  • flowy material vs. cotton. if it looks like a skirt, even better. that's the point -- for them to look like a skirt but they are actually wide leg cropped pants. how's that for mind games?!
  • length: you also don't want to go with a pair that is too long or too short, you're going to want them to hit mid shin.
  • lastly, since they are basically cropped pants give it an extra feminine touch with a sexy pair of heels or pumps!

but... be adventurous -- try a monochrome look, play with prints & textures, try dressing them down in a street-style kind of way!

top style tips: spring/summer: pair with a dressy cami, sleeveless crop top, lace top, off the shoulder, lightweight silk blouse. winter/fall: long sleeve crop top, turtleneck, layer a cami with a tissue turtleneck, chunky/off the shoulder sweater. still not sure how to wear em? go with a culotte jumpsuit -- cold shoulder and a long sleeve lace one (perfect one-piece to take the headache away of how to style culottes).

i have so many exciting things happening right now that i cannot wait to share with you. i feel humbled where this blogging journey has taken me! stay tuned and as always, thank you for stopping by! xoxo.

the pleated hem shirtdress

#workstyle.

it's been more than a year that i've worn pants to work. it's like i've gone on a pant strike?! i basically live in dresses and skirts, they are just too easy. there is no secret about my love for all things pleated. so when this dress came out with a pleated hem and in a navy print, i said #yesplease #addtocart. of course now that i have photographed it, it is sold out. #storyofmylife. for the most part, i try to buy clothes that i can wear to work because that is where i spend a huge chunk of my time. while this is a half shirtdress (the buttons only go halfway down) i was mainly drawn to the pleated hem, it just adds a lil something to it!

lastly, the accessories -- the bow pumps i have in two colors, these are considered one of their bestsellers! these dangly gold earrings go with just about everything, and lastly the "J" necklace was a bit much for me at first, i felt it was a little too large and loud (opposite of me) but i've come to love it. every time i wear it i get a ton of compliments!

side happenings: for valentine's day i took myself out to eat dessert pizza @canerossoaustin, i've waited so long for this place to make its way to Austin. their dessert pizza is a mascarpone cheese + nutella or cookie butter + optional ginger snap crumbs. #sinful. it is on the list of one of the best things i've ever eaten. i promise i woudn't steer you wrong.

hope you have fun things planned this weekend -- thanks again for stopping by!
