the one shoulder sweater & felt hat

#thehatswewear

HOWDY. confession: i accumulated more hats than i ever need in 2017 (jk, i might get the Dahlia ASAP, haha!). but i can't help it, i've become such a fan of a good wide brim hat. not sure why or how that is, maybe it's because my beautiful friend Jen // @mrsjenfrick is always rockin them. so of course, we had to partner with @gigipip to bring you our fall outfits styled with @gigipip! the love for @gigipip is insane i already own three -- the Faye (boater hat), the Jill (floppy straw hat), and now the Scottie (felt wide brim). the Scottie is beautiful amirite?! it's adjustable, the leather band is removable, and the best part is that the wide brim is STIFF! it ain't goin' anywhere y'all! not only that but the price points are so good for the quality.

Jen // mrsjenfrick.com styled her Scottie with a beautiful black coat (gift from her husband, hello #husbandgoals), boyfriend jeans, and some cognac booties check out her entire outfit details on her blog at mrsjenfrick.com. Jen lives in Kansas so i'm pretty envious of all the fall foliage they get up there! we get nothing like that in Texas. everything just dies and turns brown, #nojoke. i choose to go casual style as well, with a cream one shoulder sweater (I LOVE THIS SWEATER! also comes in other colors), skinny jeans and some riding boots! this was a fun shoot so picture heavy post coming at cha! other ways to wear this outfit: a cute bralette would look great underneath the sweater or even some over the knee boots.

also, for this collaboration Jen & i answered some interview questions about all the hats we wear, more after the jump! it was a fun one and rarely do i answer interview questions so hope it's a good read & that you got to know a little more about me. PS -- stay tuned for a GIGIPIP giveaway!

side ramblings: i cannot believe thanksgiving is THIS WEEK! the insanity. i can't wait to wear stretchy pants and stuff my face. yearly tradition at the Doan household is turkey & ham with all the fixins and PHO. i make sure that everyone leaves feeling thankful & unbutton-your-jeans-kind-of-full. there's so much i'm thankful for this year. but as my yearly saying goes, i'm thankful for the small things in life which are actually the big things. enjoy your thanksgiving and thanks for stopping by! xx

01. what are the roles or hats you lead in your life?

i, janna doan, find myself alternating hats between a blogger, homeowner, aunt, friend, sister, daughter, foodie, and program manager.

02. which hat do you find most rewarding?

ah, the homeowner hat. as much as i love blogging, i have to say... becoming a SINGLE homeowner has been the most rewarding. the house search was a long process, mainly a beatdown! but as they say, the perfect one will come along. and it sure did. it's my dream home and finally... something to call my own. #tearsofjoy #adulting

03. what hats do you find are most challenging and what do you do to embrace them?

as the homeowner hat is the most rewarding, by default it means it is the most challenging! from mowing my own lawn/yardwork, to cleaning vents, to fixing various things, to painting, etc... wow. i've learned so much along the way and by golly, there is so much pride in ownership over here!! however, a lot of times i have to be patient with myself and honest in the fact that i cannot do everything myself. i need help. and thank goodness i have my dad who's my right hand man. i'm learning so many things from the absolute greatest.

04. what hats are least known about you?

the program manager hat. my day job consists of managing healthcare quality improvement programs, looking at healthcare data, making it more accessible for public reporting. it's pretty nerdy stuff but i spend a lot of time in Excel and various data programs. one of my strengths has got to be attention to detail (surprise!)! #nerdalert yep, that's the day job!

05. who or what inspires you?

there is SO much inspiration everywhere, literally around every corner, and every time i get sucked into the world of instagram or pinterest i am amazed by all the talent out there and yet there is so much unseen! i am also so blessed to have so many insta/blogger friends that inspire me to try new things and step out of my comfort zone. after all, what's fashion if it ain't fun?!

fall basics part one

gear up for fall!

fall is around the corner and i wanted to do a two part series on some fall wardrobe basics. click the "READ MORE" for details!

01 | PUFFER VEST -- the J.Crew quilted puffer vest is always a bestseller each year! puffer vests are very versatile and can be worn with long sleeve shirts, and button downs. easily paired with riding boots (see 05 below) for an effortless casual look. see it styled here on JDC with a navy gingham button down (my most pined outfit!). another great option is the Gap primalloft chevron puffer vest with detachable faux fur hoodie.
02 | DARK NAIL POLISH -- the Essie fall 2015 nail polish collection in frock and roll is such a beautiful fall color. on the website it is described as a "shimmering expresso color" however, in really looks like a black, expresso, and dark purple with shimmer? kind of hard to describe, it's very unique. either way, this is the stand out color from their fall 2015 collection. i can't wait to use it!
03 | RAIN BOOTS -- everytime i wear my Hunter huntress rain boots (extended calf and shorter shaft than the Hunter original tall rain boots), i get comments like, "wow, you're prepared for some rain." "those are some boots you got there." etc... it's pretty funny (harharhar), but these are SOO helpful when it's pouring rain or maybe even snow? (don't take my word on the snow part because i do live in TX...) you'll be the only one with dry feet! see them styled here on JDC with a gingham top & puffer vest, and with a striped dress
04 | PLAID SCARF -- if you read blogs, you will know of the Zara plaid scarf craze last year. unfortunately, i did not get my hands on one. but this Sole Society wool plaid scarf in tan looks veryyy similar! if you don't have one. you need one. see a plaid blanket scarf styled here on JDC with a top bun
05 | RIDING BOOTS -- these Frye melissa button boots are my fav! love that they come in extended calf sizes as well in cognac. you can feel the craftsmanship when you touch/wear these boots. they are not cheap and really an investment. i see myself wearing mine for years to come. the Sam Edelman penny boot is also another great option available in varying widths and currently on sale!
06 | SUEDE BOOTIES -- booties are the best. i have a pair of Old Navy ones i wear to death and they are starting to fall apart #shouldveboughtabackup but the Sole Society lyriq heeled ankle bootie in khaki (BTW, really hot color this season) is lookin' good and also comes in navy. i like the straight cut top and the strap detail. a low heel alternative is the Sam Edelman petty ankle bootie.

the blanket scarf & top bun

finally getting back into the swing of things. and first things first. i did a top bun. WHAT?! this took a few tries. the result was much hair loss.. and hairspray out the wazoo. seriously. if you noticed, i never do my hair because 1) you guessed it. i ain't got time for that, 2) i'm clueless when it comes to curling hair, and 3) my hair is so thick, it makes it even harder to style. don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining, my parents have blessed me with such good genes! i've tried doing a sock bun before and my sister and i laughed so hard afterwards because it looked like there was a tire sitting on top of my head! no joke. so i found this thing here in the Walmart isle, one lady must have noticed me contemplating because she immediately came to my rescue and told me how much she loved hers. SOLD. they sell these everywhere, Forever21, H&M.. it works great and I recommend it for people with thick hair.

ok, onto the next item. this blanket scarf is everything! it was freezing cold when we shot these and the only thing that was warm was my neck, thanks to this blanket scarf. the thing about the blanket scarf is that it is huge. it adds some major fluff to your neck and shoulders (hence the warmness) so i believe it looks best with an updo (nothing fancy) -- high pony tail or top bun. blanket scarves are also great for traveling because of how many times you can wrap it around, and because it can also be used as a blanket. seriously. i love the neutral tones of this one in particular.

this vest was so HOT last year, i couldn't get my hands on it in time. they were selling on ebay for $200+. it was crazy. so... when it came out again this year, i snagged it. immediately. they are still available on J.Crew in chartreuse, bright ivory, navy, and black; and on J.Crew Factory in bohemian red, warm bisque, dark navy, black, and a checkered buffalo blue. the only difference between the two is pricing and the pockets. the J.Crew excursion quilted vest is priced at $120, and the pockets have flaps with two exposed buttons at the top of each. the J.Crew Factory quilted puffer vest is priced at $58.50, and the pockets (flap-less) open at an angle with a single hidden button on the inside of each.

probably more than you wanted to know about these vests... but i hope this helps! be sure to pick one up ASAP! they go great with button downs (as i have it styled here), sweaters, and long sleeve shirts. a great "extra layer" that will get lots of use this season!
